Hall of Famers To Help House Families

UPLAND, CA, 2/13/2012 – Former LA Dodger and Major League Baseball Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda leads a growing list of athletes coming to the inland empire for a charity golf tournament to provide housing for seriously ill children. The sports celebrities include NFL greats Eric Dickerson, Marshall Faulk and Christian Okoye.

“Tommy helps to bring a new level of quality to the tenth annual event for Steven’s Hope” says Tournament Co-Chair Cathy Allan. Lasorda will be the featured speaker at banquet and auction for The Drives To Save Lives Golf Classic benefitting Steven’s Hope for Children. The one day event will be at Sierra La Verne Country Club on Monday, May 14.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Tommy Lasorda became an icon of Los Angeles Dodger Baseball and one of the most successful managers in baseball history. The enthusiastic manager who “bleeds Dodger blue” guided his team to seven division titles and two World Championships in 21 seasons as manager. After his retirement from the field, he became a Dodgers executive, and his association with the club has spanned seven decades. He has won numerous “Manager of the Year” awards and let the United States to its first-ever gold medal in baseball at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was elected to the MLB Hall of Fame in 1997.

Eric Dickerson played for four NFL teams (Los Angeles Rams ‘83-‘87, Indianapolis Colts ‘87-‘92, Los Angeles Raiders ‘92-‘93 and Atlanta Falcons ’93) gaining a total of 13,259 yards rushing rank him seventh on the all-time rushing list and 13th on the all-time touchdown list with 96. He appeared in six Pro Bowls and was inducted in to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1999.

Marshall Faulk is a 7-time Pro Bowler & 3-time First-Team All-Pro who played for Indianapolis Colts ’94-’98 and the St. Louis Rams from ‘98 to 2005. His 100 Rushing Touchdowns puts him 7th all time, and he ranks 10th all time in Rushing Yards with 12,279. He was inducted into the NFL Hall Of Fame in 2011.

Christian Okoye played with the Kansas City Chiefs as a fullback from 1987 to 1992. He gained 4,987 yards in 6 seasons and was a 2-time Pro Bowler & 1-time First-Team All-Pro.

Proceeds of the event are going to help fund the apartments Steven’s Hope for Children uses to house families of children needing transplant surgeries or treatments for cancers or tumors.

“These athletes have big hearts for kids. Once the word got out about what we were trying to do they wanted to help,” says Allen. She knows a thing or to about putting on these types of tournaments from her experience as Tournament Chair for the Eric Dickerson Challenge and the Mark Christopher Charity Golf Classic.

“Event sponsors will have the opportunity to have one of the stars join their foursome and make it a five some,” according to Tournament Co-Chair Cathy Allen. “It’s a great way to spend four or five hours with one of these stars.”

“Families from around the country get referred to us by case workers at treatment centers like Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital,” says Steven’s Hope for Children Co-founder and President Tony Cappelli. “These families need to have a temporary home away for home where they can be a family while their child gets help. A successful event will help us to keep our apartments open. That means we save lives.”
