Steven’s Hope To Close Permanently

Posted by on July 1, 2020

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic causing cancellation of fundraising events, the Steven’s Hope for Children Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to close down all operations.   According to Executive Director and Co-Founder, Tony Cappelli, “In light of the current situation, we (the Board) did not see any reasonable way to continue operations without necessary funding.”

The shutting down of the economy and the limitation of group events, meant the elimination of the annual golf tournament, as well as other fundraisers planned for the summer. Additionally, with a very high potential that the annual fundraising lunch in November may not be allowed to happen, left the organization without an income stream to continue operations.

Cappelli said, “There was discussion of cutting back on programs, but eliminating support for the families we are working to help didn’t make sense.  We exist to help families and if we can’t do that, we cannot exist.  It was a very hard decision.”

Tony had made an announcement to the public about the decision and how the legacy of Steven and Steven’s Hope for Children will continue.

Steven’s Hope began after Tony and his wife, Sandy were expecting their third child.  Five months into the pregnancy, they found out that their unborn child had hypo plastic left-heart syndrome, along with secondary issues.  Doctors had recommended aborting but the Cappellis felt there was a reason for their child and continued the pregnancy.  They had hoped that Steven’s heart would be healed and if not, maybe his organs could be donated to save the life of another child. However, when he was born, his condition did not change and after 32 hours, Steven died in his parent’s arms.  That was when they found out that his organs were not suitable for donation.  This left the Cappellis looking for a reason for Steven’s short life.

After much soul searching, they started Steven’s Hope for Children in 2002.  Since then, the charity has helped families from California, across the country and around the world.
